Bikes are getting more expensive. And they will continue to do so. So, we can forget about affordable gravel bikes for now. Road bike components, combined with demand, make this segment a distinct entity. However, even here, there are clear divisions, and although budget versions are characterized by specific compromises, there's no shortage of willing buyers. So, if you're wondering which gravel bike under 4,000 PLN is best, this guide is for you. We won't provide a specific answer here—too much depends on your preferences, and bike prices and availability change so rapidly that this information would be outdated within a few months. Instead, we'll suggest what to look out for and what to watch out for.

Frame - we recommend aluminum
A new gravel bike under 4000 will certainly not have any carbon fiber. That leaves steel and aluminum. And while we wholeheartedly support the former, it's not a good idea at this price point. Heavy, unbutted tubing and clunky components add to the overall weight. It's better to opt for less flashy, yet light and stiff aluminum. A steel fork is also worth considering, as it will absorb vibrations and improve ride comfort. But why do most of them look so awful?!
Road bike equipment isn't cheap.
And savings have to be made somewhere. Manufacturers come up with various ways to circumvent this problem, and they're usually not great combinations. Avoid the Shimano Tourney road groupset. They're probably the worst derailleurs in the world. And I'm not talking from a bike snob's perspective. They really don't work. A Shimano Claris or Sora groupset is in a completely different league. The more components from the same groupset, the better. A 2x8 or 2x9 configuration is perfectly fine, and cheap parts are an added bonus. Avoid fancy single-chainring drivetrains not designed for this type of setup, like 1x8. A chain that constantly drops is not a good thing. Gravel bikes up to 4000 PLN can also have a mix of groupsets based on both road and MTB components. It doesn't combine well. Adjustment problems are a given.

Brakes - gravel up to 4000 PLN may have a trap
Don't expect hydraulics. It's a shame, because mechanical disc brakes are... so-so. At best. Modulation issues are unfortunately inherent. A gravel bike under 4000 PLN can probably have both Shimano calipers and discs. This setup significantly reduces the chance of bending and annoying squeals. And I know from experience that noisy disc brakes can bring out the worst in a person. Tektro calipers? They'll be loud. Bush calipers? They'll be loud and surprising (nothing, nothing, nothing, locked wheel). Fortunately, upgrading to something more reasonable isn't overly expensive. Only then might a gravel bike under 4000 PLN cost a bit more overall.

What gravel bike is up to 4000 PLN? Used
Yes, we were talking about new bikes, but buying something used means we're upping the price a notch or two. And in this case, it makes a significant difference. Lighter frames, better drivetrain performance, and with a bit of luck, even hydraulics or a carbon fork. Unfortunately, many used gravel bikes under 4000 PLN are priced that high due to their condition. Pay particular attention to the drivetrain and brakes. Regularly replacing the chain and brake pads isn't a given, and these bikes are often used for food delivery lately. A personal inspection is mandatory!
