Cranks. The crankset, also known as the crank arm or simply pedals, is one of the main drive elements in a bicycle. It consists of three components: the right arm, the left arm, and the chainring, commonly known as the chainring or sprocket. The cranks, mounted on either side of the frame, are positioned at a 180-degree angle to each other. The chainring is mounted on the right arm spider and bolted to it. Older cranksets (now simply cheaper) have the chainring integrated with the crank, preventing its replacement. The arms are mounted on a bearing-mounted axle called the bottom bracket. The bottom bracket is screwed into the frame's bottom bracket shell. Historically, crank arms were mounted using a wedge. Currently, the most common standard is a square. It's worth noting that this is one of the most critical parts of the entire drivetrain due to the loads it carries. This directly leads to the emergence of many different designs, seeking a compromise between durability, strength, and weight. Based on shape, we can distinguish two crankset standards: ISO and JIS. Crankset mounting standards include Octalink V1 and V2, ISIS, Shimano Hollowtech, GXP, PressFit, and PressFit30. The latter four are found in higher-end cranksets with integrated axles. The cheapest cranksets are made from forged and hollow steel rods, found virtually exclusively in older bicycles. Better (and more expensive) cranksets are cast or milled. Aluminum is also commonly used today, and carbon fiber is less common. Crank length (the distance between the bottom bracket and pedal axles, which can range from 165 to 180 mm) should be appropriate for the user's leg length and the distance from the bottom bracket to the ground. It's important to remember that as crank length increases, cadence decreases, as does their stiffness and the distance from the pedals to the ground. Our regular offer includes cranksets from manufacturers such as Prowheel, BLB, and Purte Fix. We also have a crank mechanism in stock, manufactured specifically for Antymateria by a quality-proven supplier from Taiwan. |
