Gravel up to PLN 5,000

It's the beginning of 2023, and "gravel bikes," contrary to skeptics' predictions, haven't been forgotten. What's more, everything indicates they've found a permanent place in the cycling market. They've also penetrated the world beyond cycling – I'm regularly asked by acquaintances, whether close or distant, which gravel bike for up to 5,000 PLN (or 6,000 PLN, or any other amount) is best. I'll try to answer this question, although in a way that may not be satisfactory for everyone. Due to rampant inflation and the general confusion in the cycling market, I think that instead of presenting a list of specific models (I've already written such articles – for example, gravel bikes for up to 3,000 PLN ), it would be more sensible to show what to pay special attention to in this budget. This will make things more relevant for longer, and your choice more informed. Surely this is a good deal?

There will be no big deal, so let's focus on the most important features

Gravel bikes up to 5,000 PLN are definitely in the lower price range – the bikes will be configured for budget. Our gravel bike, even in its basic configuration, doesn't come close to this price, but remember that compared to major brands, we produce only a few. Compromises arise not only from the factors mentioned above but also from the prices of road bike components and disc brakes. Fortunately, manufacturers often use a single frame for a model line, and in this case, cheaper models benefit. I recommend skipping anything from "premium" brands, as the logo on their entry-level models makes up a significant portion of the price. Avoid high-end bikes as well – the lower price usually results from quality savings on less visible components, and these are often inventions with unusual solutions or unusual geometry.

A gravel bike up to PLN 5,000 can have a decent frame and fork.

Gravel frame
Our gravel frame combines steel and carbon.

The majority of bikes are built with aluminum frames. This is a lightweight and inexpensive solution that ensures stiffness and a relatively low weight. Bikes in this segment typically weigh just under 11 kg. A higher figure usually indicates a low-quality frame or heavy wheels. I don't recommend pairing an aluminum frame with an aluminum fork—the whole thing can be too stiff and cause wrist pain on bumps. A steel (interestingly, cheaper) fork is a better option. The higher weight translates to better road cushioning. Carbon fiber is ideal, but gravel bikes under 5,000 PLN with carbon components are rare, although it's worth looking for—they're a good investment. You can also find models with steel frames. They offer much better comfort, but those made of low-quality, unbuttoned tubing can be unpleasantly heavy. If you're planning to go on an adventure, also check if the frame has mounts for racks, water bottles, etc.

Drive and brakes

The most common road groups here are Shimano Claris and Sora, in 2x8 and 2x9 configurations, respectively. Both are worth recommending, although the Sora offers significantly better shifting. Occasionally, you'll find bikes with a 10-speed Tiagra, and even (it's rare, but it does happen) those equipped with a SRAM Apex 1x11 drivetrain. Needless to say, the latter is a highly desirable option, right?

Gravel Sora
The Shimano Sora drivetrain is perfectly fine for gravel, although it may have problems in the mud.

When it comes to brakes, they're almost always mechanical disc brakes. A gravel bike under 5,000 PLN simply can't fit hydraulics into your budget. Pay attention to the discs and calipers themselves – they should be brand-name products, not second-hand ones – you can feel the difference in quality. I also don't recommend Tektro brakes, which are unfortunately very common on budget gravel bikes. TRP mechanical-hydraulic calipers are rare – they're fantastic.

Pay attention to the wheels - gravel up to 5000 means inevitable savings

Braiding a bicycle wheel
Sapim spokes are a guarantee of quality.

And a customer wondering which gravel bike will be best for them under 5000 PLN rarely pays attention to this. Rims are usually of decent quality, though they tend to be heavy. This is simply because they have to support wider tires. The situation is more difficult with spokes and hubs. These are usually products from the "Krzak" brand. This affects the durability of the wheels, and in the case of the hubs, it can mean problems with replacement parts. Therefore, I recommend looking for models with basic, yet well-known and balanced components.

Gravel bike up to PLN 5,000 can be upgraded later

Because why not? If you like it, there's nothing stopping you from dabbling in tuning. Well, almost nothing, because it's important for the bike to be adaptable, meaning it allows for the installation of higher-end components. The first thing you should do here is replace the flat-mount brakes. Without them, installing hydraulic groupsets will be problematic at best. The frame and fork should also be compatible with thru-axle wheels.

A gravel bike under $5,000 is a purchase that requires market research and careful comparison shopping, but it's possible to find something worthwhile among the many disappointing offers. Good luck!
