Campagnolo Super Record Wireless Power Meter

Campagnolo no longer competes in the WorldTour, but no one can deny that Super Record is still the most prestigious team in the world, and now has a power meter worthy of its status.

They say good things come to those who wait, and Campagnolo certainly put that to the test before releasing its power meter, which finally arrived in April of this year. SRAM introduced a power meter in the Red groupset back in 2012, and four years later Shimano released Dura-Ace 9100. Even last year, when the new Super Record Wireless groupset was introduced, a power meter was still missing.

The Super Record wireless power meter is located on the four arms of the crankset, giving it a distinctly different and more industrial look than the standard version. The four carbon fiber arms no longer protrude directly from the crankarm to hold chainrings, but instead, in a "spider" configuration, with an angular structure containing the sensors and electronics, create a visual discontinuity in the crankset design. It's similar in appearance to the German SRM Origin power meter, used by UAE Team Emirates with Campagnolo groups before switching to Shimano in 2023. However, the Super Record lettering on the carbon fiber crankset and the Campagnolo wings logo on the crankset make it unique.

Instead, the Shimano power meter is integrated into the crankset, with strain gauges inside, and only a small transmitter capsule reveals its presence. The SRAM power meter, like the Campagnolo, is also located on the crankset, and the housing gives it a distinctive look compared to cranksets without power meters.

Both types of power meters have advantages and disadvantages, but when it comes to accuracy, Shimano claims a margin of error of +/- 1.5%, similar to SRAM, while Campagnolo claims an accuracy of +/- 1%. Campagnolo's power meter uses sixteen sensors arranged in a diamond shape; power data is calculated by crossing the torque values detected by the strain gauges with the angular velocity of the spider. Campagnolo claims that "extreme precision" is also guaranteed by high-frequency data sampling, with measurements taken every five milliseconds at a frequency of 200 Hz.

That said, it's difficult to draw definitive conclusions based on a simple comparison of sensor counts or data collection methods between different power meters. For example, Shimano's Dura-Ace uses 24 sensors (12 per crank), but provides lower accuracy than Campagnolo's.

As you might expect from the Super Record name and the €2,360 price tag, the cranks are made of unidirectional carbon fiber and equipped with a titanium axle and ceramic USB bearings, using the same Ultra-Torque cable design as the standard version. The build quality is exceptional, and in person, the product looks luxurious, as it should.

Charging is handled via the same cable and port as the derailleur batteries. As with all Super Record Wireless groupsets, including the shifters, a clearly visible LED indicates charging status and, during use, indicates whether the system is calibrated, active, and so on. It's available with 170mm, 172.5mm, or 175mm crank lengths and 45/29, 48/32, and 50/34 chainring configurations.

Configuration

Setting up and calibrating your power meter is incredibly easy thanks to the MyCampy 3.0 app, updated with new features and device compatibility. Of course, monitoring battery life is crucial. Campagnolo claims the battery offers 100 hours of range and a full charge takes 3 hours and 45 minutes.

In summary, the Campagnolo power meter lives up to the legendary Super Record name and integrates perfectly with all top-of-the-line components.
